3 The Hard Way is a creative mentorship platform built on lessons learned through experience. Across over 80 episodes, we’ve turned honest conversations, practical advice, and hard-earned insight into a growing resource for creatives finding their way through an industry that rarely comes with instructions.

Business Context
Creative careers rarely follow a curriculum. There are plenty of places to learn the tools. Far fewer teach you what happens around the work: navigating an industry, presenting an idea, leading people, surviving a bad decision, building confidence, handling clients, recovering from failure, or knowing when the thing that worked before isn’t working anymore. Most of us learned those lessons by living through them. 3 The Hard Way was created to make that experience useful to someone else.
Challenge
How do you turn experience into mentorship that can travel?
Traditional mentorship is valuable, but it doesn’t scale easily. One conversation helps one person. One relationship reaches only so far. And access often depends on already knowing someone willing to open the door.
We wanted to create something more accessible without sanding away the honesty that makes mentorship useful in the first place.
Not another collection of inspirational advice.
Something built from what actually happened.
Strategy & Creative Approach
We started by getting specific about who we wanted to help. Audience personas gave us a clearer picture of creatives at different stages of their careers, the questions they were carrying, and the gaps traditional creative education wasn’t filling.
From there, we built the brand around a simple idea: mentorship should feel like hearing from people who have actually been through it, not another institution telling creatives how their careers are supposed to work. That thinking shaped the visual identity, voice, content strategy, and eventually the conversations themselves.
As the platform grew, long-form episodes became shorter insights. Recurring questions became themes. Over 80 episodes began forming a larger library of lived experience that could be revisited, shared, and built upon.

Insight
Experience gets more valuable when someone else can use it.
The mistakes, pivots, difficult conversations, breakthroughs, failures, and small decisions accumulated over a creative career contain knowledge that rarely makes it into a textbook.
That became the premise of 3 The Hard Way.
We didn’t need to present ourselves as people with all the answers. The value was in being willing to talk plainly about what we’d learned, including the parts we learned the hard way.

Capture
Start with the questions, mistakes, decisions, and career moments creatives encounter but rarely get taught how to navigate.
Curate
Pull the useful lesson from the experience, separating the story we lived through from the insight someone else can actually apply.
Construct
Turn those lessons into episodes, short-form insights, conversations, and resources designed to meet creatives at different stages of their careers.
Circulate
Put the knowledge where the next generation can find it, revisit it, share it, and carry what they learn into their own work.

Outcome
We set out to make hard-earned creative knowledge easier to reach. Over 80 episodes later, 3 The Hard Way has become a proving ground for what that can mean. The audience hasn’t grown to the scale we originally imagined. But the value of the platform has shown up in other ways.
Building it taught us how to turn individual experiences into knowledge someone else can use. Along the way, we developed batch-recording practices, refined recurring production and post-production workflows, and began documenting what we’d learned so less-experienced creatives wouldn’t have to start from zero.
The growth was personal, too. Lotenna gained more experience in front of the camera. Greg got the ongoing mentorship and creative development he was looking for. And the work reached people we didn’t necessarily know were paying attention.
After landing a motion design internship with the Detroit Pistons, Mikhail, a young creative who had followed the series, sent us a message:
“Watching all of the 3 The Hard Way episodes paid off.”
One message isn’t a metric. But it is proof of the idea.
